One thing I love about playing tennis is it does not have to be expensive.
You may have heard the story if you have read some of my other posts, but I started out playing tennis for $0.
I discovered an old wooden tennis racket in my grandparents’ garage and hit against a brick wall for quite some time before I decided to buy a new racket or take tennis lessons.
Here is what I will be going over in this post:

How much does it cost to play tennis?
If you are wanting to try out playing tennis for little to no money at all it is totally possible.
There are just a few things that you need to have to start that you may be able to get second hand from a friend or family member.
If you are just wanting to see if you enjoy playing tennis then I would suggest borrowing a racket before you purchase one.
Tennis rackets at the beginner level are fairly cheap, but why spend money when you don’t have to?
If you don’t have someone that can lend you one then make sure to check out thrift shops and garage sales.
I have seen many at these two places and they charge very little.
The other thing you will need is tennis balls.
Once again you can borrow some from someone or you can purchase some for fairly cheap.
Getting a bag of balls like this can actually save you some money in the long run if you plan on playing frequently.
After you have played tennis for a while you may decide you want to take your game to the next level you may choose to spend more money on a racket upgrade or take lessons from a professional.
Is tennis an expensive sport?
Tennis can become an expensive sport if you choose to to buy high end equipment or take expensive tennis lessons at a private club.
However, it can also be a very inexpensive sport to play as very little equipment is needed.
There is also a wealth of free information to learn how to play tennis.
You can read about ways to improve your serve, what drills will improve your footwork, and how to hit a great backhand or forehand all for free thanks to the internet!
Best Cheap Tennis Racquet for Beginners
If you have decided that you would like to commit to playing tennis then it may be time to purchase a beginner tennis racket.
This tennis racket had lots of great reviews and it is very affordable.
You could also go to any sports shop and ask them their opinion on what racket would be best for your budget.
What is the average cost of tennis lessons?
This is a tricky one because it depends on where you live and which type of tennis lessons you are planning on taking.
Private tennis lessons at a club will be more expensive than if you choose to take lessons from a community option or in a group.
There are benefits of each type of tennis lesson and you can read more about my thoughts on taking private tennis lessons vs. group tennis lessons here.
Where to Play Tennis for Free
Depending on where you live you can enjoy playing tennis both outdoors or indoors.
If you are looking to play tennis for free, playing outdoors will be your best option.
Free Public Tennis Courts
Free public tennis courts can be a great option to meet with friends or other tennis players to play a match or practice.
They are usually kept up by the city and are open to anyone who wants to play.
One thing you will want to keep in mind is that often times, public tennis courts will also be used for lessons put on by parks and recreation and also city tennis tournaments.
You will want to check your city’s parks and recreation website before heading to the public tennis courts to ensure they are not being used for either of those two things.
Other outdoor tennis courts that are open to the public are ones that you can find at your local schools and colleges.
Once again you will want to make sure that they do not have practices for students or scheduled tournaments before you go play.
